Assignment Title – Security searching and control in custody

environment.
P2 – Outline the types and methods of searches conducted by staff in a custodial
environment.
P3 – Describe control measures in place in a custodial environment.
P4 – Explain the process of receiving and discharging individuals and their property into and

The purpose of a prison is to serve the public by keeping in custody those committed by the
courts and to look after the prisoners with humanity and help guide them to law-abiding
useful lives in custody and after their release. Prison security is divided into three types of
security; physical security, dynamic security and procedural security. Physical security is
measures designed to safeguard personnel and prevent unauthorized access to certain areas
in the facility. They do this by securing the environment by the use of entry gates, walls, bars,
locks and CCTV. Dynamic security is the security of the people, done by looking for patterns in
intelligence, close monitoring of gang members, sharing information, building close
relationships with external agencies and partnerships to share the intelligence alongside
tackling drug and violence issues. Procedural security is the identification, establishment,
enforcement and audit of security policies. These are standard to lower the risk of
unnecessary incidents.
Physical security:
The purpose of physical security is to make sure that prisoners cannot escape from custody,
physical measures have been put in place to prevent this and keep them separated from the
public. They create physical barriers to restrict free movement and monitor and detect
behaviour which could arouse suspicion. To do this they use measures such as high walls,
locked and patrolled entry and exit gates and zoned and locked areas inside the boundary
walls. All of these measures are used to deter prisoners from attempting to escape as they are
less likely to try if there is an extremely high risk they will be caught. It is important that
regular checks are made by routine patrolling, they monitor surveillance regularly and
conduct random or provoked searches.
Locks – In a prison there are locks almost everywhere. These not only prevent access to
restricted areas but keep the prisoners where the patrolling officers can keep a close eye on
them to make sure there is no unruly or suspicious behaviour. Locks in a prison range from
electric locks (such as the ones on cells), key locks (such as the ones on guard’s surveillance
rooms) and automatic locks (which with approval and CCTV/ video conformation will be
unlocked by someone in a control room).
Cells – Cells are used to separate prisoners and keep them in certain areas at particular times
of the day, it is where they will spend most of their time. Their cells will have minimal facilities
to remove the threat of them causing harm to themselves or anyone else. Routine and non-
routine searches are conducted to check these to remove any prohibited items they may have
gathered.
