Population Parameters
- Factors that affect the size/density of a population

1. natality/recruitment Causes an increase in the number of
2. immigration individuals in a population

3. growth of individuals -> causes an increase in biomass


4. mortality Causes a decrease in the number of
5. emigration individuals in a population


Population Increase
-the reproductive potential of the population
-the carrying capacity of the environment which determines the
number of organisms the environment can support

Natality:
 Percentage increase in size of a population per unit time
 The number of live births per unit time in animal populations.

Different Reproductive Strategies

K-Strategy
 majority die as adults
 small number of offspring are produced
 low juvenile mortality rate
 parental care occurs
 many individuals survive and reach maximum life span
 offspring are large

 Climax Community/Species : ecological community in which population
remains stable and exist in balance with each other and their environment
( final stage of succession )
 Type 1 survivorship curve -> seen in higher vertebrates – most mammals
and birds
