The causes of schizophrenia, like all mental disorders, are not completely understood or
known at this time. Researchers have spent millions of hours (and many hundreds of millions of
dollars) studying this condition. The more they learn, the more it becomes evident that the
condition is far more complex than anyone realized. (Bressert, 2018). This neuropsychological
disorder is described as “ a long-term disorder which affects behavior, emotions, causes
withdrawals, inappropriate actions, and faulty perceptions, such as hallucinations and mood
swings.

This article describes schizophrenia as an illness that displays complex symptoms and as
a result, researchers have been out of reach when it comes to neuroscientific explanation. In this
article, research has shifted its focus to include alleviating psychotic symptoms, while improving
functional outcome within those suffering from this disorder. Because researchers find
schizophrenia to be complex, this then presents a fundamental problem for developing better
treatments that targets the source, and the root causes of this disorder. Researchers reviewed
three approaches that could possibly aide in trying to understand the causes: biophysically based
models, which focuses on the development and test cellular level and synaptic hypothesis.
Secondly, researchers utilized connectionist models which gives information and clarity, based
