"Antigone" is a famous ancient Greek tragedy written by the playwright Sophocles around 441 BCE. It is the third play in a series of Theban plays, following "Oedipus Rex" and "Oedipus at Colonus." The play is named after its central character, Antigone, who is the daughter of Oedipus, the former king of Thebes. The story of "Antigone" revolves around the conflict between Antigone and King Creon of Thebes. Antigone's two brothers, Eteocles and Polynices, had fought against each other for control of Thebes, and both were killed in battle. Creon, who has assumed the throne, orders that Eteocles be buried with full honors, but he decrees that Polynices should be left unburied and exposed to the elements as punishment for his rebellion. Creon's decree is a matter of state policy, and he commands that anyone who attempts to bury Polynices will be put to death.

, BACKGROUND
To understand the socio-political background of Sophocles' "Antigone," it's essential
consider the context of ancient Athens during the time it was written and performed
which was in the 5th century BCE. While the play itself is set in Thebes, the historical
and cultural backdrop of Athens significantly influenced the themes and ideas
presented in the play.
In "Antigone," the socio-political background of Athens during the 5th century BCE provid
a backdrop against which the play's exploration of issues like the clash between divine
and human law, the consequences of inflexibility, and the limits of authority can be
understood and appreciated. The play invites its audience to contemplate these timeless
issues through the lens of ancient Greek culture and politics.
