Common Hose Materials -Cotton -Nylon -Rayon Vinyl -Poly-mired vinyl -polyester Braided Hose yarn braided over a rubber liner Wrapped Hose fabric or mesh material impregnated with rubber or plastic wrapped around a rubber liner and covered with plastic or rubber Woven Hose rubber liner and one or more woven outer layers Hose Jacket Outer woven layer of a woven hose Hose Coupling Materials Brass alloy Aluminum alloy Magnesium Types of Couplings Threaded Storz Quarter Turn Oil Field Rocker Jug Snap or Jones Parts of Threaded Couplings Shank Swivel Higbee cut Lugs Shank the tailpiece, bowl or shell of a threaded coupling and the male has rocker lugs or pins Swivel houses the female threads of threaded coupling and also has rockers, lugs, or pins Higbee Cut provides the connection point on threaded couplings Lugs, Pins, Rockers the risen metal bumps on the couplings used to tighten connection Storz Coupling also known as a "sexless" coupling and can be locked with a 1/3 turn Types of Hose Rolls -Straight -Donut -Twin Donut -self-locking twin donut Uses for Straight Hose Roll -storage -returning to quarters for washing -loading back onto apparatus Characteristics for Donut Hose Roll -when it needs to be deployed directly from roll -ends need to be together on the outside -is less likely to spiral or kink Forward Hose Lay laying hose from water source to the scene; female coupling comes off first Reverse Hose Lay laying hose from scene to the water source; male coupling comes off first Accordion Hose Load Horseshoe Hose Load Flat Hose Load Dutchman Hose Load a short fold of hose or a reverse fold that is used in allowing for coupling placement on the load; changes direction and location of coupling Valve Appliances -Ball -Gate -Butterfly -Clapper hydrant valve/ gate valve allows an additional engine to connect to the hydrant without shutting the hydrant down Types of Fittings -Adapters -Reducers -Double male -Double females Double male adapter with male ends on both sides Double female adapter with female ends on both sides Strainer placed over the end of a hard suction hose to block debris from going into the pump First thing you do when deploying a roof ladder Carry it to its destination Municipal water systems include • Water source • Treatment facilities • Means of moving water • Distribution system Parts of a door • Door: Entry itself • Jamb: The frame of the door • Hardware: Handles, hinges, etc. Forcible Entry the technique used by fire department personnel to gain access to a structure whose normal means of access is locked, blocked, or nonexistent. Types of Doors A. Wood Swinging B. Metal Swinging C. Revolving D. Sliding E. Overhead (folding, sectional, roll down, slab) F. Firedoor Door Materials: A. Wood B. Metal (aluminum, steel) C. Glass (tempered, plexiglass, lexan) Types of Windows: A. Double hung/checkrail B. Hinged/casement C. Projected/factory D. Awning and Jalousie E. High Security (lexan, barred, screened--**lexan is 250 times stronger than glass) F. Horizontal sliding G. Fixed Window Materials: A. Wood B. Metal C. Vinyl clad D. Screens E. Burglar bars F. Wire mesh Types of Locks: A. Mortise B. Bored (Cylindrical) C. Rim D. Padlock Ventilation the systematic removal and replacement of heated air, smoke and gases from a structure with cooler air. Positive pressure ventilation forced ventilation technique that uses the principles of creating pressure differentials (higher pressure INSIDE forces smoke OUTSIDE) Negative pressure ventilation using fans to develop artificial circulation and pull smoke from the structure. Hydraulic ventilation The uses of fog stream to push products of combustion out of the structure Sources of Water Supply A. Surface Water (rivers, lakes, reservoirs, swimming pools) B. Ground Water (wells, water producing springs) Means of Moving Water: A. Direct Pumping System B. Gravity System C. Combination System Direct Pumping Water System - use one or more pumps that take water from the primary source and discharge it through a filtration system and treatment process. Gravity Water System - uses a primary water source located at a higher elevation than the distribution system. The gravity flow from the higher elevation provides the water pressure. Combination Water System - uses a combination of direct and gravity systems (gravity flow provided by elevated storage tanks) Three Types of Distribution System A. Primary Feeders B. Secondary Feeders C. Distributors Primary Feeders - large pipes (mains) with relatively widespread spacing that convey large quantities of water to various points of the system for local distribution to smaller mains. Secondary Feeders - network of intermediate sized pipes that reinforce the grid within the various loops of the primary feeder system, and aid the concentration of the required fire flow at any point. Distributors - grid arrangement of smaller mains serving individual fire hydrants and blocks of consumers Types of Hydrants -Dry Barrel Hydrants -Wet Barrel Hydrants: Dry Barrel Hydrants: 1. Common in climates where freezing weather is expected. 2. Hydrant is empty when closed and not in use. 3. Drain on hydrant is open, when not in use, to remain empty. 4. Valve holding water back is below frost line. 5. Usually constructed of cast iron, but important working parts are made of bronze. Wet Barrel Hydrants: 1. May be used ONLY in areas where NO freezing weather is expected. 2. Hydrant is always filled with water. 3. May have one or more compression valves. 4. Usually constructed of cast iron, but important working parts are made of bronze. Types of Water Pressure A. Static Pressure B. Normal Operating Pressure C. Residual Pressure D. Flow Pressure Static Pressure - if water is not moving, the pressure exerted is static. Static pressure is stored potential energy. Normal Operating Pressure - flow of water through a distribution system during periods of normal consumption demand.
