What is the significance of the dark haired girl’s note?
The dark haired girl passes Winston a note that writes “I love you”. This note is significant because it
is an act against the party and triggers a load of emotions within Winston. In a society where there is
no longer love or intimacy, this note is the first time Winston encounters such an incident.

Overview of chapter: what happens; is anything new introduced? Does anything stand out?
In this chapter Winston runs across the dark-haired girl from the fiction department. The girl falls
down and seems to hurt her arm. As Winston reaches to help her, she secretly hands him a folded
note which reads “I love you.” After this, Winston sits with her at the canteen where they make plans
to meet at Victory Square. When they meet the girl gives her directions to a discreet place where they
agree to meet. They are hidden from the telescreens by the crowd and they have an intimate moment
while departing.

Identify authorial choices and analyze these. Why have they been used? What is the effect?

Simile: “For a week after this, life was like a restless dream.” Helps the reader understand Winston’s
state of mind and current emotions.

Dialogue: There is dialogue between Winston and the girl- first in the canteen then at the Victory
Square. Their dialogue is tense and limited, there is no expression of emotions. Shows how cautious
they are while communicating, due to the Party’s strict rules.

Imagery: “A long line of trucks, with wooden-faced guards armed with sub-machine guns standing
upright in each corner, was passing slowly down the street.”
“Foreigners, whether from Eurasia or from Easta- sia, were a kind of strange animal.”
“She spoke as though her heart were fluttering. She had certainly turned very pale.”

Foreshadowing: “With hands locked together, invisible among the press of bodies, they stared steadily
in front of them, and instead of the eyes of the girl, the eyes of the aged prisoner gazed mournfully at
Winston out of nests of hair.”

Symbols
Telescreen: The Party watching over every action of members and having complete control over even
their private lives. This prevents them from even communicating with each other freely.

The girl’s note: The note that Winston receives demonstrates the girl’s feelings towards him and it
can be a symbol of an act of rebellion against the pressure of the Party. Emotions like desire, and love
are not supported by the Party, so a tangible act against this is evidence for the rebellion against the
Party’s rules.
