Central executive:
Controls other slave components and decides which is required for the task
It can process information from different senses
o Each is coded differently
o Involved in higher mental processes
When handling more than one task, CE allocates resources to slave components
Decides what working model pays attention to
Has little to no capacity
With practice, tasks become automated – require less capacity of CE
o Requires less capacity of CE
o Frees us to perform other tasks
Phonological loop:
Codes information acoustically and is split into two stores:
ARTICULATORY PROCESS
PRIMARY ACOUSTIC STORE
Articulatory Process:
Rehearses and stores sounds collected by PAS
Capacity: 2 secs of speech
Information from PAS is repeated in loop to prevent decay
Primary Acoustic Store:
Speech perception
ST store (1-2secs) that receives acoustic information
Remembers sounds in order.
Visuo-spatial sketchpad:
Codes and rehearses info through visualising mental pictures
Limited capacity of 3-4 objects
Logie(1995) sub-divided VSSP into:
VISUALCACHE - stores visual info about form and colour.
INNERSCRIBE - handles spatial relations and rehearses info in VC to CE
Episodic buffer:
Takes info from VSSP and PL and integrates them together
Helps with tasks that require both slave systems
Temporary storage-limited capacity of 4 chunks of information
Has links to LTM for information needed by WM
2 way communication with LTM
