Children allowed to provide uncorroborated testimony in alleged sexual abuse cases - children can testify to an event even if what they say was not supported or confirmed by evidence/authority. 2. States eliminated the competency requirement for child witnesses- all witnesses are to be presumed competent. Conditions Related to Accurate Testimony - Answer - Children who spontaneously report abuse are generally telling the truth. - Untainted testimony is believed to be more accurate then after repeated questioning. - Believed to be more accurate if there is less time delay between the abuse and the reporting. - Many children don't spontaneously tell others because they are afraid, ashamed, or don't realize it is wrong - necessary to ask questions about what is going on in the child's life. - Children are more accurate when answering open-ended unbiased questions. - Interviewers should avoid providing names or specific events in questions.
