UNIT 1 1914-1918 - World War One

1. Causes of World War I
1.1 World in 1914
1.1.1 Britain
- Britain was the largest empire with land and wealth from all of the world including Canada,
Australia, India, South Africa. This colonies brought wealth, prestige and soldiers to England
- It had a strong economy as it was the first to industrialize
- It had to deal with rebellions and revolutions and internal conflicts

1.1.2 France
- France had some colonies in Asia and Africa that provides materials
- It had to deal with massive government debts, rebellions and conflicts with Britain over colonies
- It lost a war to Germany and lost some lands

1.1.3 Russia
- Russia as a large country governed by a corrupted monarchy with a large population that was
poor, starving and desperate
- It is seen as backward and poor, its disorganization and political corruption made the country
slow to industrialize
- The size of Russia was intimating to the rest of Europe

1.1.4 Germany
- People were tired of war as there had been many war fought such as conflicts with England and
France over colonies
- Government was able to focus on building a strong nation as Germany did not have a large
empire to maintain. Germany was technologically innovative and was rapidly industrializing
and building wealth
- Although Germany was divided into many states, the workers of Germany had a strong work
ethic and sense of national pride

1.1.5 Austria-Hungary
- It is an Austrian and German speaking country governed by a monarchy King Ferdinand
- It was constantly dealing with rebellious groups for their independence through Civil War

1.1.6 Italy
- Italy had divided into city states including Florence, Rome and Naples
- They are relatively poor and had been slow to industrialize. They had very little resources and
would love to expand their territories.
- Like Germany, the intense national pride led them to unite and become a strong nation
