Define the term “National Grid.” [1 mark] b) State the approximate voltage and frequency at which mains electricity is distributed. [4 marks] i. Voltage: ii. Frequency: c) In Britain, mains electricity plugs have a total of three wires. Describe and explain the wires and the other safety features of the plug. [5 marks] _ d) A student wanted to replace a fuse, the original fuse was a 3 amp, and the replacement was a 13 amp. A safe current for the device is 2 amps; if the resistance across the fuse is 2 calculate the potential difference. [3 marks] Volts a) Describe what happens when two like poles on a magnet are brought close together. [2 marks] b) Not all materials are magnetic, name one magnetic material. [1 mark] c) On the diagram of the bar magnet below, sketch the magnetic field lines. [2 marks] d) Describe how a magnetic compass works. [3 marks] a) Draw the circuit symbol for a diode. [1 mark] b) Sketch the current/potential difference graph for a diode. [3 marks] c) Explain the shape of this graph. [3 marks] _ d) Give an example of use for a diode and explain how it works. [2 marks] 04 A student carried out an experiment to find the spring constant of a spring. The table shows the data collected. Mass added (g) Length of spring (m) 0 0.170 100 0.235 200 0.300 300 0.365 400 0.430 a) Draw a second table to determine the values needed to plot a graph to find the spring constant. Use the value of 10 N/kg for gravity. [5 marks] b) There are two ways to determine the spring constant of a spring. From the data collected, give both methods. [2 marks] c) Draw a graph that will allow you to determine the spring constant. [4 marks] d) Determine the spring constant for this spring in N/m. [4 marks] e) State how you could determine the work done when stretching this spring. [2 marks] f) Thus, calculate the work done to stretch the spring 26cm from the original length. [2 marks] 05 A student was investigating a complex circuit for 2 minutes and 30 seconds. The student needed to know the charge running through the circuit, but they could not read that information directly. They decided to work out the charge using other values they could read. During this time 67.5kJ of work was done by the circuit and the potential difference recorded across two points was 180V. a) Calculate the power that was used. [4 marks] b) Calculate the current in the circuits. [4 marks] c) Thus calculate the charge in the circuit.
