UNIT 18: Assessing Children’s Development Support Needs

In this assignment I aim to explain, assess and evaluate the developmental
milestones and progression of three children, Shajah, Daisy and Ben.

Children's development is defined as the process by which a child grows and
changes over time, this is all the way from conception, to becoming a fully
functioning and independent adult. It incorporates all developments regarding PIES -
physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. Although each of these
aspects are seperate, they all influence each other. An example of this would be that
as the brain develops, intellectual ability also develops, a delay in development of
the brain would create delays in the progression and development of intellectual
ability.
A number of factors influence the way in which children develop, and no two
individuals will develop the same. The innate and biological makeup of the child will
influence their development, as will lifestyle and parenting styles.

Growth, defined as an increase in measurable quantities, such as height (length in
babies) and weight, these can be measured effectively and compared to ‘norms’ to
check that a child is developing in the expected way. On the other hand,
development is a holistic measure and can include development of intellectual,
emotional and social factors. These cannot be measured and information that is
found at the child's development is qualitative.

Childhood is where the most development in an individual occurs, a large number of
changes occur from birth to the first few years of life and these changes can lead to
how an individual acts for the rest of their lives.

SHAJAH
The first of the children studied is of Shajah, she is an 8 month old female, and is
currently attending nursery - from what is described she is meeting nearly all
development milestones and norms and is therefore developing as a ‘typical’ child
would.

Language development and Social development
Shajah is beginning to develop her language skills in turn this will help develop her
social skills, from what is described, she is developing normally and meeting the
expectations of her age milestones. She is beginning to babble. Babbling usually
develops between 6 and 9 months old and therefore, at 8 years old she is

, developing in accordance with these milestones. Babbling indicates she is aware
that those around her rushing language are beginning to explore her own language
capabilities. After a child starts to babble, the next stage in language development is
where children gain the ability to blend vowels and consonants and their speech
sounds and attempts get stronger. This usually happens at between 9 - 10 months
old, eventually leading to the child attempting to copy the language and words they
are hearing around them.

Noam Chomsky was a theorist who focused primarily on the development of
language in children. He theorised that each child was born with the innate
understanding to learn and understand language, using the term ‘language
acquisition device’ he described the idea that this is what allows children to learn
and develop their language skills. This theory can be applied to Sharjah, it could
explain that Shajah is beginning to babble due to her brain being ‘pre programmed’
to understand and use language.

Chomsky's theory of language acquisition is based on a biological understanding.
Due to this, professionals can use it to understand the way in which language
develops in a medical sense - it is seen as a process that involves the brain's
makeup - and the innate ability a child is born with. This explains why children are
able to begin talking when they are still relatively young, and why some children
begin to babble a lot earlier than 6 months.

However, a theorist named Vygotsky, argued that the babbling of a child i spot linked
to the way a baby is born, or linked to thinking but instead the babbling of a child and
further developments of language are based on social experiences and not a
biological ability to understand.

Vygotsky believed that a child's development of language is strongly based on the
language the child can hear being used around them, and the child learns through
experiences and actions of other, older individuals. Following Vygotsky's theory in
terms of Sharjah, he would say her babbling is as a result of imitating the language
she is hearing around her and this slowly develops until a child's language begins to
properly come together at around age 2.

Where Chomsky's theory would typically be used by medical doctors and other
professionals to describe theists to describe language through the biological
development of language, Vygotsky's theory is more likely to be used by
psychologists as its focus is much more on the way that social interactions lead to
the development of language, this is important as it helps other professionals
understand that language development is affected just as much by social
experiences and upbringing alongside just the genetic makeup, and innate abilities
that Chomsky described.
