The book The Hobbit is a fictional book about hobbits, dwarfs, dragons and a lot more. Bilbo Baggins,
the main character, goes on a journey looking for something dangerous.
I chose this book because of all the non-realistic characters in the story.
During his search, he encounters all kinds of setbacks.
But what kind of setbacks......
3. Samenvatting
Bilbo is a hobbit, who likes to sit at home. One day, an old acquaintance came by, Gandalf the witch.
He asked Bilbo to go on an adventure with him but hobbits don't like adventures, so he declined the
offer. The next day, Gandalf suddenly stands in front of his house with twelve dwarfs. They eat his
entire house and then ask him if he still going on an adventure. Bilbo finally agrees and he becomes
a burglar who helps the dwarfs to steal the most expensive possession from the dragon, who has
their treasure.
In the beginning, the journey was still easy but after a couple days, Gandalf left them. And because
of this, they were almost eaten by trolls but Gandalf saved them. After that, they decide to go to the
fairy realm of Elrond. They stay here for a while and Elrond helps them to unravel the map.
Bilbo and the dwarfs can't enter the secret entrance because they can only enter at Durin's day, but
no one knows when that day comes. Short after this, the whole group leaves.
In the mountain they accidentally end up in a Goblin cave where they have to fight for their lives.
Meanwhile, the dwarfs are losing Bilbao, they kill the Goblin king and get away.
Bilbo end up in a passage where he finds a ring that makes him invisible. The ring helps him to
escape a creature named Gollum and the guards at the entrance.
Short afterwards they end up in a forest where they are threatened by wolfs and Goblins. But the
great eagles saved Bilbao and the dwarfs and they are going to a place where Beorn (a wearbear,
someone who can change himself into a bear) sleeps. He is not very hospitable but with a lie, they
can convince him.
But they ended up ad friends and Beorn lent Bilbo and the dwarfs his horses so they can travel
faster.
When they arrive Mirkwood (a dark forest), Gandalf leaves them. The company gets lost and are
captured by giant spiders. Bilbo saves everyone except Thorin. After this, they are captured by the
forest elves. The elves only let them out if they take some of the treasure from the mountain.
But Thorin Thorin doesn't want this so the elves lock them up. However, Bilbao was still invisible and
did not dare to take off his ring. After two weeks of making plans, Bilbao managed to save the
dwarfs from the elf prison by putting then in barrels and letting them sail across the river in the
barrels.
The barrels stop at Lake Town, a village near the lonely mountain. The inhabitants welcomed Bilbo
and the dwarfs really welcoming because the found out that Thorin in the king of the lonely
mountain. They get stuff from the village to climb the mountain and they find the secret passage.
But the passage won't open, the next day is Durin's day so the passage opens. Bilbo steals the object
but he wakes de dragon up. The dwarfs send Bilbo into the cave to fight the dragon, but he escapes
and Smaug, the dragon attacks Lake Town.
