Promoting anti-discriminatory practice
Promoting anti-discriminatory practices is important because that is one way to make the service user
feel safe and that they are in a protected environment. They can only give this type of ‘trust’ by
respecting their decisions, helping them in their hard time, without discriminating against them, and
keeping equality between service users and service providers.

Discrimination is when someone is being abused or they are being treated differently from an unknown
person which is unfair to those who are in difficulties, because they did not do anything wrong, and
people are being discriminated against because of their age, gender, religion, sexual and many other
things. As we learnt there are four types of discrimination:

https://www.apa.org/topics/racism-bias-discrimination/types-stress /https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk

➔ Direct discrimination is when someone abuses another person to their face and makes them
feel guilty for things that they did not do, for example calling some brown girl black because
her skin colour is dark and that is told to her face, which will make her feel bad and
embarrassed loading to her self-esteem to go down

, ➔ Indirect discrimination is when you are not physically Infront of the person and it’s judging you
without even knowing you, and they don’t have the right to do so. But, nowadays, society is
normalizing it, which they should not, but they do;
➔ Unfair discrimination is when a person is treated unfairly by someone, like when an employer
does not consider a person because they are older than the other employee
➔ Positive discrimination is when the decision is made in a person’s favour because there is
something different about them, like when a company has a specific want of an employee like
having a girl with red hair colour

Equality is when you get the same laws or legislations that are applied to every individual including those
with disabilities, who need different support or care from the NHS. The most known inequality is between
male and female workers doing the same job, but not receiving the same pay, this is one example of
gender inequality, because as we know that in some developing countries, they are still not given the
equality that the population should get. This is because they still have the old thinking of ‘women cannot
do any job-work because they can only do housework anything else. Inequality also happens among
people with different religions when they are under care, they tend to eat food given by the hospital
and some people they may not eat some foods Muslims do not eat pork, Jewish people have different
diets, and some are a strict vegetarian, so if those type of food is not available and they can’t get it
they’ve discriminated them. The advantages of it are every person is treated fairly and given equal
opportunities to people of different ethnicities.

Furthermore, Diversity is about what makes each of us unique like our backgrounds, personalities, life
experiences, and beliefs, all the things that make us who we are. It is a combination of our differences
that shape our view of the world, our perspective, and our approach. People should appreciate the
differences between individuals and treat their values, beliefs, cultures, and lifestyles with respect
because in my viewpoint people are different because of these differences and that is what makes the
world beautiful respecting different people and behaving well towards people's worth, trust, and
cultur+es. An advantage for the British people is that they have a country with a multicultural society
that can provide different types of skills and create opportunities for the population.

As we know, the importance of promoting equality is large amount because every individual who is
struggling with their illness needs several types of support. Also, it helps ensure that people are having
the same access to all opportunities even though they are different. As we see in the first case study,
the lady called Joan needs help with her everyday life because she got a stroke, and she is one-eyed
blind, so she seriously needs someone to look after her. Her support worker, Angela, is there to help her
with house things like washing dishes and clothes, cleaning, and socializing for some time because she
hasn’t got anyone to talk to. Her neighbour used to take her shopping at home so that she doesn’t
have to struggle, but they never gave the change back and that was causing a financial problem for
Joan, so she didn’t hesitate and told Angela about this problem and ever since they stop taking her
change. All this happened because Angela didn’t see Joan as a Black African woman, she saw her as
her patient and as her responsibility of taking care of her. This made Joan feel more confident and her
self-esteem increased, this is because she told Angela that she has started going to the doctor by
herself and now she wants to go into the day centres. This makes us think that she wants to create new
friendships and she is tired of staying by herself, this is all because of Angela who did act respectfully
towards Joan’s decision she could start a new life by herself.

In the second case study, we have a boy called Stefan who just got out from being addicted to drugs
and after his treatment, he moved to a hostel where he will be looked after by Dave. He is doing some

, sessions for those like Stefan and teaching them how to move forward with life so that they do not
make the same mistake again as he listens to Dave, he regained self-esteem, and he becomes more
confident in the steps that he takes. Dave understood that there are different types of needs; Those
can be physical they can’t move, mentally they need support because they can’t cope with their
emotions or can’t express their feelings or their mental health is not stable, so he maintained equality he
did not see what age, gender, ethnicity or lifestyle people in his session had, but he helped them, so
that in future before doing that mistake, they would think twice, this is how Dave looked how people in
his session had a different background and it makes them different from each other but he maintained
equality in between everyone.

As we know equality means that every human being should have the same opportunity and rights in
health and social care services Dave is helping Stefan to get a job because as we know many
companies will not accept him because of his earlier mistake in addictions drugs, and they do not want
to put him in between those who are vulnerable. However, we also know that when he was an
adolescent, he went through discrimination because he was not able to write well in English, so he had
a lack of self-image and lack of self-esteem, but now he wants to go back to education to do further
studies so now he is more than confident because he learned his lesson and understood what is right
and what is wrong.

https://cpdonline.co.uk/knowledge-base/care/equality-in-health-and-social-care/)

In the third case study, we see that there is a Muslim woman called Khadija who has learning
disabilities. She is attending a day centre several times per week so that she doesn’t stay alone. Also,
she wants to socialize with other people, she is always happy and bright and that is what makes her
feel different from everyone else. But she got a stammering problem and when she gets nervous, she
cannot cope well with her feelings, and it becomes difficult for her to express herself. Her, social worker,
Norma noticed that she is not engaging with anyone, and she wants to find the reason. As Norma is a
social worker for her patients and she has the responsibility to take care of everyone and help them if
they are feeling uncomfortable; In this case, she thinks that Khadija is uncomfortable because of the
male presence, so she will be discussing on that and made her feel comfortable with her and now she
can share everything with her. Norma didn’t think that she is a Muslim, and she shouldn't get the
support that everyone else is getting, however, she noticed how she was behaving in the day centre,
and she will help her get comfortable with her so that she can share things with her and help her in
personal life things or with her stammering

However, most of the time, we expect fair and accessible services, but for some reason in any
healthcare department, not everyone gets the same treatment, in the way regardless of who they are,
like Joan’s case her support worker goes to her house to help her in cleaning and other stuff because
she cannot do chores and her physical problem which is she half blind and she got a stroke. Angela
needs to show the 6 C’s that are compulsory in the health and social care department.

Skills/attributes necessary when meeting
individual care needs
When supporting the three service users that Angela, Dave, and Norma need to be familiar with the
skills and attributes while interacting with service users.
