For this M2 I will be comparing the use of motivation theories within Harrods. I will explain how the
different theories of motivation contribute to the techniques used for the motivation of employees
within Harrods. I will also identify the methods used to motivate staff, I will link these methods to the
motivations techniques and finally I will be explaining the similarities and differences between the
use of at least two theories.
The methods that Harrods uses to motivate its people are: that the employees are given more
responsibility, that the employees are given more freedom within their work, that Harrods
communicates to its employees in a good way, that there is a magazine for employees, the
employees can fill in a quality form, there is a morning briefing and finally that the employees are
able to check their personal goals and the goals of the department where they work. I explained
what these methods do to people and how they motivate the staff of Harrods within P3.
Theory used by Harrods Linked with motivation theory reason
More responsibility The theory of Maslow this theory linked with Maslow
because he thinks when things
like the physiological part,
safety and love is done the
worker should be esteem this
means confident, so when e
employee is given more
responsibility the employee
will be more confident about
what he is doing and he then
knows he is doing his job good
more freedom while working The theory of This technique is linked with
McGregor/Herzberg McGregor because McGregor
just like Harrods thinks that
employees shouldn’t be
treated as lazy but should be
able to do the job as the
employees want to without
being looked at by the boss all
the time. It’s linked to
Herzberg because he thinks
that employees are de-
motivated when there is a high
level of supervision
good communication to The theory of Mayo This is because Mayo thinks
employees that money isn’t the only
motivator. But he found out
that employees should be
given good communication
and a few other things to be
motivated while working
