P4- Explain why safeguards must be in place if restrictive physical interventions are used

In my previous tasks, I have spoken about interventions for poor behaviour and the implementation
and use of these interventions. When it comes to certain interventions e.g. physical interventions,
safeguards must be introduced and put in place for such interventions. But why is this? Well, below I
will explain why safeguards must be in place if restrictive physical interventions are used.

First things first, what are safeguards? A safeguard could be something as simple as installing a
physical barrier to keep people away from specific danger. Safeguards are steps that can be taken to
make something inherently safer. All in all, they are measures to keep the danger away. But why
must they be put in place if restrictive physical interventions are used?

If physical restrictive interventions are implemented and used, then safeguards must be put into
play for protection reasons, to protect vulnerable individuals from harm or abuse. These safeguards
can vary from staff training regarding the use and implementation of restrictive measures to policies
or codes of practice to guide the use of restrictive interventions. But why must safeguards be put in
place?

Safeguards must be implemented for protection reasons. Any staff i.e. teachers who utilize physical
interventions must receive the mandatory training to do so and follow guidelines to ensure they
have tried reasonable alternatives before using physical intervention. In the event of physical
intervention, staff before carrying out such interventions should assess if it’s safe to do so, is the
environment safe, are the circumstances reasonable and are there enough staff ext. Throughout the
use of physical intervention, safeguards must always be in place to protect individuals from harm
and abuse.

In my case study of Tom seen in previous tasks. If physical intervention was to implemented onto
Tom for behaviour purposes, then, safeguards must be in place to protect Tom from harm and
abuse. Otherwise, Tom could end up badly injured.

Prevent excessive use of force

Restrictive physical intervention refers to the application of physical actions as a response to
challenging behaviour. Physical intervention refers to the implementation of direct physical force to
limit or restrict physical movement or mobility. The application of physical intervention may be used
as a last resort. If a student at a school was to repeatedly punch or kick a student, a teacher may use
physical intervention to limit the student attacking, using restraint or other physical intervention. Or
if a police offer was to attacked or feel threatened, a police officer may push the attacker to the
ground as a physical intervention to get the attacker off the other officer. So, with such force allowed
you can see why safeguards must be in place.

One of the reasons being to prevent excessive use of force. If safeguards are not in place to prevent
the excessive use of force, then the excessive use of force could be utilized. The application of
unnecessary and excessive force is by no means expectable. Unnecessary force within the
application of physical intervention could lead to life-threatening or life-changing injuries. Maybe
while restraining a pupil a teacher decides to hit and punch them to make them keep quiet or stop
resisting. The hit and punch could lead to injury and unnecessary pain. So, to prevent such scenarios
from occurring safeguards must be introduced to protect and prevent individuals from being harmed
excessively during physical intervention. In the use of physical intervention, to safeguard, multiple
staff could be on the scene to prevent such occurrences.
