Drinking a latte or soda, texting, applying make-up, viewing a GPS or chatting with friends while driving are ALL distractions that can result in fatal crashes. Over 3000 teens per year, between 15 and 20 years of age lose their lives in fatal crashes. Fatal crashes resulting from distracted driving are 100% preventable. It's important to realize that when it comes to distracted driving it is not about bad teens doing bad things, it's about good teens making poor choices. Whether you are the driver or passenger, it's extremely important to always make good choices and to speak up when you find yourself in an unsafe situation. IMPACT Lesson 2: RU LETHAL The estimated economic loss of ALL motor vehicle crashes in 2012 was $26,000. There wasn't one day without a death on Texas roadways in 2012. Over 230,506 people were injured in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 1907. In 2012, one person was killed in a car crash every 2 hours 35 minutes. 91,264 Texas teen drivers between the ages of 15 and 19 were involved in crashes during a one year period. IMPACT Lesson 3: IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU! Drugs are the #1 killer of teens in America. Drivers between the ages of 55 - 70 have the largest proportion of drivers killed due to distracted driving. IMPACT Lesson 4: DISTRACTED DRIVING KILLS! What is the definition of distracted driving? IMPACT Lesson 5: TEXTS CAUSE WRECKS! Texting while driving is not that bad if you are an experienced driver. In Amanda's video she was involved in a crash that took her life exactly one year from the date of her first collision. After the crash Amanda's parents learned she was using her phone while driving. IMPACT Lesson 6: InTEXTicated or InTOXicated InTEXTicated is a term that can describe a person who is distracted by texting while they are driving. It's more dangerous to be inTOXicated while driving than to text while driving. Several behaviors can be signs of both distracted and intoxicated drivers. If a law enforcement officer spots a driver crossing multiple lanes, they can automatically assume they are intoxicated. Texting for many teens is their primary form of communication. IMPACT Lesson 7: GDL There is only one phase for GDL restrictions. In order to graduate to GDL Phase II, teens must hold the Learner License for at least 6 months and be 16 years of age.
