1.1 The terms “project” and “project management”.
According to Eric .w. Larson, Clifford f. Grey (2011, p57) a project is a unique planned
temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service or other completely
defined outcome or deliverable within a limited specified time scale and budget/resources.
Project management is planning, organising, leading, and controlling a project. It is process
done to achieve project goals by leading the project team. It’s a matter of mobilising and
coordinating resources to achieve project goals.
1.2 The range of skills that project managers need
Project managers are in charge of initiating, planning to design monitoring and completing
projects. There are skills that are needed for them to be able to manage teams and have
these team members committed & motivated to achieve the project goals. The project
managers must manage the expectations of key stakeholders of the project and
communicate the status of the project. The project managers manage all the resources
involved on the project. Project management skills allows the project manager to
successfully execute the project with efficiency. The following skills are essential for project
management.
1. Communication
Project management relies on communicating the project objectives and deliverables to the
project team and also giving feedback to stakeholders about the progress of the project in
order to do this communication skills is very vital. They need this skill to share the vision,
goals and issues on the project to team members. They also need to produce reports and
presentations for the milestones.
2. Leadership
In order for the project managers to coordinate tasks well as well as keeping the project
team motivated leadership skills are essential. Leadership skills allows the project manager
to coordinate tasks and encourage the team to successfully complete the project.
