⁃ people in tnazania stood up and fought against colonial rule in the early
1960’s
⁃ Maji-Maji Rebellion - water
⁃ this was a fight against the british
⁃ there was this rumour that when tanzanians were being shot at they must
not flinch because their bullets would turn into water
⁃ brings in an african and spiritual element
⁃ rituals were done before battles were fought
⁃ tanzania came victorious
⁃ tanganyika
⁃ 1961 - they got their independence
⁃ they then brought in a small island = zanzibar
⁃ zanzibar and tanganyika = zanzibar

⁃ even though tanzanias land was very rich
⁃ there were many lakes
⁃ the volcanic activity created the lakes
⁃ this brought rich soils and rich ashes to the surface
⁃ it is near the equator
⁃ All the countries in the same region were very rich
⁃ this points to the skew economic system brought in by the British (because
the country was poor)
⁃ tanzania focused on cash crop production
⁃ cotton
⁃ tea
⁃ sisal
⁃ but suddenly there was a drop in demand for this
⁃ and tanzania had vast land filled with sisal
