Case study 1
Collecting human samples
Collection of blood and sputum sample + transportation of them.
which substances are considered as biological agents ?
o cell cultures
o microorganisms
o genetically modified microorganisms
o human endoparasites
which disease can they cause?
o Infection
o Allergy
o Stomach and intestinal complaints
Biological agents can be present in blood and sputum samples diseases that can be passed to other
humans.
Biological agent Possibly present in Route of transmission
HIV Blood Blood/blood contact, mucous membranes
Hepatitis B Blood Blood/blood contact, mucous membranes
Hepatitis C Blood Blood/blood contact, mucous membranes
Influenza Sputum Inhalation
Tuberculosis Sputum Inhalation
Corona virus Sputum Inhalation
E. coli - Ingestion
Salmonella - Ingestion
Transport to the lab
Internal transport = buildings are connected via a walkway
Sample preparation for the internal transport:
1. the outside of the sample tube/container needs to be disinfected with a suitable disinfectant (es.
70% ethanol)
2. the samples should be double contained for transport in a leak-proof, unbreakable and
disinfectable containe
a. tube + container = the first containment
b. the second = container that complies with the requirements
3. the outside of the second container should be labeled with a biohazard sticker
The samples are then ready for internal transport.
Entering lab
You are about to analyse biological agents: blood and sputum.
