,College 1: Introduction to the course; Business, Technology, &
Innovation

Technological innovations are helpful devices. So they are not only fun to use, likes drones,
they can also help organizations with delivery for example. You have to think how your
organization needs to change if you want to use innovations. For example, you have to
change your whole delivery system if you want to use drones from that point on.

Netflix, Spotify, Uber, automatic robot cleaner are new technologies that are already here
for some time. But companies also have to change their way of selling and have to think
about using these technologies. Singers don’t get a lot of money from Spotify, so they sell
more merchandise and festival tickets are more expensive. This changed the whole music
industry because the beginning of Spotify.
Netflix used to be a physical rent service. You could rent a DVD and bring it back if you had
seen it. They were the first in the streaming industry.

New innovations are robots, AI, machine learning, delivery services, robot cars. Loetje is
famous because of their steaks, but they now sell meat that is 3D-printed.

The terms “technology”, “innovation” and “organizations” don’t work on their own. We look
at the interplay of these terms.
-> Innovation often spurred by technology
-> Innovation and technology affect organizations
-> Organizations affect efficient and effective use of technology
-> Organizations affect innovation

Assignment: Airpods
The cutomazation of Airpods.
We are an organization who makes earpods. We sell them in 5 colors. We want to be able
for customers so they can customize their earpods. So instead we make them in 5 colors,
what will happen if customers will be able to fully customize their earpods.
• Sales process: What does the front-end order process look like? How does the site
have to change?
First 5 colors with pictures of the product, this is changed to a color wheel. The price
will also change.
• Information systems: What information goes where in order to process the order
correctly and ship it to the customer?
Processing the order, then it goes to the sales, then production, then a quality
control of every product, then packing, shipping.
• Organization: How does the organization need to change to offer 1-day order
customization?
They cannot have any stock anymore. This will take it longer to ship the product.
• IT: What information technologies does the organization use?
The information about the order payment needs to go to the sales team. They check
is the payment is completed. Then the product information about the order needs to
go to the production team. Then the address information needs to go to the

, packing/shipping teams. And the last step is that the shipping team needs to give the
finance team a sign that the order is sent.

Conclusion
-> Innovations may completely change the way organizations function
-> When thinking of new technology or other innovations, you should always take the
characteristics of the organization into account

Defining Innovation
Invention = The creation of a ‘thing’ or ‘ability’ for the first time. This creates something new.
Innovation = using that thing/ability to create impact. This creates something that sells.
1. = invention + market entry via user diffusion/adoption
a. Using an invention to create value through economic/societal impact by
changing behaviors, interactions, processes, ….
2. = iterative in nature

Invention or innovation?
E.g. Google glasses: it was far of what people were used to. You could record with the
glasses, find information, it was weird to wear something like that. It was too far of what
people were used to. They didn’t think about how people would use it. So it stayed in the
invention phase. But in certain sectors it could be useful, like in the military field, or in the
hospital. This is slowly becoming an innovation. We now think about for what kind of
information/sectors this could be useful.
E.g. Apple: when the first iPhone was produced. Microsoft also had a phone, but the iPhone
was used in a different way. In this way iPhone was an innovation. Now they have small
innovations like the amount of camera’s on the phone.

Innovation = “The implementation of a new or significantly improved product (good or
service), or process, new marketing method, or a new organization method in business
practices, workplace organization or external relations.”
Innovation = “Innovation is the process of applying or implementing something new and
useful.”

Innovation

Innovation process
When we tend to think of innovation, people only think about the beginning, creating the
innovation, but we should also look at the innovation process in the organization and the
market

Today: exploration

• We often associate innovation with creative individuals (prototypical genius
inventions something in his garage).
• And we consider creativity to be an amalgamation of intellectual abilities, knowledge,
personality, etc.
• This is not often the case: Innovation is more often a group process
o Within departments (R&D), across departments, or even outside the
organization
o Innovation is a combination of organizational affordances:
▪ Human capital, knowledge management, strategy, culture, structure,
etc.
• An organization’s characteristics affect innovation capabilities.
->The idea doesn’t have to come from within the organization, there can also be a trigger
from the society/market

Exploration: idea -> object -> practice
This process is called the “innovation funnel”. From many ideas to ultimately few
innovations in practice.
