The Greek City-state (Polis)



 Each city-state was ruled by it’s own government
 Had it’s own army
 Had it’s own laws and rules
 Citizenship differed in each city-state

Colonisation
 Famines( hongersnood) caused inhabitants of city-states to move and colonize new
fertile areas
 ‘’Greek’’ islands
 Coastal areas -Mediterranean

Forms of governance
 Monarchy = is that is ruling over them most times a king queen prince or princess examples
are. Examples: Willem alexander Queen Elizabeth
 Aristocracy = form of governance in which a small ruling class of rich people holds all power
examples: Britain’s royal family
 Tyranny = form of governance where all power is held by one person: the tyrant a tyrant is
an absolute ruler who came to power by violent means, and who often ruled with violence as
well. Examples Kim Jong-un
 Democracy = form of governance where the people chose their own rulers. The word
democracy comes from the Greek words demos (=people ) and kratein (=govern).

Athenian Democracy
 How democratic was Athens
