Different ending sweat

I tried to take some words out, but that’s hard if I don’t want to erase important parts…

In the morning, Sykes was on his way to Della Lewis’ house where Bertha had been staying. Filled up
with anger, he muttered all the ugly words he should’ve screamed at Delia, ‘’You scrawny woman,
how do you manage to piss me off every time!’’ He was furious. Sykes tried to calm down, but all he
can think about is telling Bertha what an abominable woman he married. The more hateful words he
muttered to Delia in his head, the closer he got to Della Lewis’ house.

As soon as he arrived Bertha was thrilled to see him. Sykes told Bertha plenty of things Delia did that
made him furious. ‘’She pretends like she’s the one whom earns all the money, like I do nothing! And
she’s a terrible Christian, washing clothes for the white people on a Sunday?!’’ Bertha calmly listened
until Sykes was done rattling about ‘despicable Delia’. Bertha always calmed him down, she’s his safe
haven.

A day later Bertha decided to visit Delia and see for herself is she’s really that bad. She walked to
their house, wondering if this was the right decision to make. Despite her hesitations, she kept
walking. The first thing she saw was a hardworking woman, washing clothes like her life depended on
it. She hesitated if that could be Delia. No that couldn’t be her, Delia was a lazy woman, only washing
clothes on a Sunday, a hypocrite Christian. Bertha decided to ask her where she could find Delia. ‘’Hi
miss, where can I find Delia?’’ ‘’This is she’’, the woman replied.

Bertha was shocked there for a moment. Was Sykes so angry at his hardworking wife, whom pays for
their house with the money she makes? Bertha always admired hardworking women. She wondered
how she could ever be so blinded by all the horrific things Sykes said about her. Just there she lost
her understanding for Sykes.

A few days later Sykes came over. He triumphantly talked about the snake he put in the house and
how scared it made Delia. ‘’This is revenge!’’ Bertha hesitated if she should tell Sykes that she visited
Delia and that she actually admired her hardworking attitude. ‘’Maybe you’re looking at it the wrong
way, you could also appreciate how much she does for you and the house.’’ ‘’What did you just say?!
Are you defending that atomy?’’ Sykes screamed full of astonishment. Bertha wanted to take those
words back immediately. Sykes was furious. How could Bertha just turn his back on him. Bertha saw
the anger in Sykes’ eyes. She thought she could calm him down by giving him a hug. As she leaned in
for a hug, Sykes turned away. Bertha was confused, was he that mad? Sykes turned back at Bertha
and suddenly she felt a dreadful pain in her stomach. Sykes stood across her. ‘’I hope you know now,
you do not argue with me’’

Bertha wanted to leave this city. She felt miserable and she imagined how hard this must have been
for Delia the last 15 years. She went to Delia’s. She did not dare to face Sykes again, so she went at a
moment she knew he would be gone. She saw Delia and Bertha could not stop talking about the
horrific things Sykes said about Delia, about herself and how he abused her. That’s when Delia said
the most evil words, but Bertha knew, this was the only way out.
