Chapter 12 Mitosis
Concept 12.1 Cell Division
⚠ A cell's DNA, genetic information, is called its genome. The DNA is
packed together in structures called chromosomes.
All the DNA and proteins that are the building material for
chromosomes are referred to as chromatin.
Distribution of Chromosomes During Eukaryotic Cell Division
A chromosome consists of 2 sister chromatids, which are joined together by
protein complexes called cohesins.
The centromere is the region where the two chromatids are most
attached.
The portion of a chromatid on either side of the centromere is
referred to as the arm of the chromatid.

, Mitosis is the division of the genetic material in the nucleus and is followed
by cytokinesis, the division of the cytoplasm.
Concept 12.2 Mitotic Phase
Phases of the Cell Cycle
One cel division for human cells usually takes 24 hours.
Interphase is 90% in the cell cycle.
G1 phase, growing of the cell. (5-6 hours)
S phase, copies the chromosomes. (10-12 hours)
G2 phase, grows more as it completes preparations for cell division.
(4-6 hours)
Mitotic (M) phase includes mitosis and cytokinesis (<1 hour). Mitosis
depends on the mitotic spindle, which begins to form in the cytoplasm
during prophase and is made from microtubule fibers.
