1.1 There are three parties that stand to benefit from assessment.
Discuss this statement by naming the THREE parties that stand to benefit from
assessment and explaining why they benefit from it.

1.2 Discuss FOUR types of assessment that are stipulated in your CAPS document.
In your discussion, define each of the four types of assessment, give an example of
each and explain when is it used.

(i) Formative assessment✓
Example: Classwork, quiz, oral question and answer, short assignment.

Definition: Type of assessment usually used to monitor how far new
knowledge is being acquired and to modify teaching and learning. ✓
When used: During the teaching-learning experience, as the lesson is
progressing, or at the end of the lesson. ✓
(ii) Summative assessment✓
Examples: Test, assignment, project, examination. ✓
Definition: Type of assessment that is used to assess the overall progress
of the learner for promotion purposes. ✓
When used: At the end of a unit, a term, or a year. ✓
(iii) Baseline assessment✓
Example: short test, survey, assignment, a quiz, a questionnaire, oral
question and answer session. ✓

Baseline assessment is a situation-appraisal-and-subsequent-planning
assessment, done at the beginning of the year or before a new topic is
started. It aims to understand “where to start?”; “what learners know?”
and “what to aim for? ✓
When used: At the beginning of the year or before a new topic. ✓
(iv) Diagnostic assessment✓
Example: Formal pre-test, survey, informal oral question and answer
task. ✓
Definition: is a looking-in-depth assessment performed to establish
individual learners’ strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills gaps,
and obstacles.✓

When used: It is a form of pre-assessment that can be performed at the
beginning of a lesson or topic in order to identify the challenges and
guide the lesson. ✓

1.3 There are THREE points of reference that can be used in educational assessment.
