Flashcards for A Level biology Chapter 1 Biomolecules. Contain all you need to know for this chapter of the course. Are detailed and concise, and work best with Anki, but can be used with quizlet. They are in the form of a txt document that can be imported into anki or quizlet. Some images are missing due to the format, so these images will have to be replaced manually. See my account for the other chapters of the course.

What kind of molecules does a hydrogen bond contain? Polarised
molecules
What are monomers? The smaller molecules or subunits that make
up polymers
What is a polymer? A larger, longer chain molecule that is made
up of monomers.
What kind of reaction joins two monomers together?
Condensation
What does a condensation reaction release? One water molecule
What kind of reaction separates two monomers? Hydrolysis
What does a hydrolysis reaction require? A water molecule
What is metabolism? All of the chemical processes that take place
in a living organism
What is a carbohydrate molecule made up of? Carbon, Hydrogen and
Oxygen
What is a carbohydrate monomer called? Monosaccharide
What are the three examples of monosaccharides? Glucose,
fructose and galactose
What is the name for two carbohydrate monomers bonded together?
Disaccharide
What do monosaccharides taste like? Sweet
Are monosaccharides soluble? Yes
What is the difference between two monosaccharides? Their
structure
What is the difference between alpha and beta glucose? Alpha
glucose has both H/OH groups in the same orientation, H and the
top and OH at the bottom. Beta glucose has the right OH group at
the top instead.
What is the structure of alpha glucose? """<img

What is the name of the test for reducing sugars? The benedicts
reagent? Light blue
Why do only reducing sugars work in the benedicts reagent, making
a copper (I) oxide precipitate giving a positive result. Non-
reducing sugars cannot donate an electron.
What are the reducing sugars? All monosaccharides and maltose
What is benedicts test? Add some of the food sample in liquid
form (achieved by grinding up and dissolving in distilled water)
to a test tube, add an equal volume of benedicts test is
positive, what is the colour change observed? Light blue to
green if there is little reducing sugar present, to amber if
there is some reducing sugar present and to brick red if there is
a lot of reducing sugar present.
Why is carbon so special? It can bond with itself multiple
times to form a backbone on which many different atoms can be
joined.
What is the meaning of semi-quantitative? Despite being a
