Question 1

With close reference to this traditional African story, write a paragraph in which you discuss
the element =s of plot, setting and characters that enable it to be identified as a fable.
Why the Bat flies by Night is a short fictitious tale with animals as characters that behave and
speak like humans in order to teach a moral lesson. This tale is set in the bush where Oyot the
bush rat was chatting to Wemiong the bat in order to find out why the bats’ soup always tasted
so good. The bats’ jealousy and envy got the best of him, and he lied and mislead his friend
Oyot, and this technically led to the bush rats’ death in the end. In my opinion, the moral of the
story being conveyed here, is never to fully trust someone even if you know them, as well as
the fact that karma will always come back to you in some way, hence why the bat got punished
in his own way and only fly at night.

Question 2

In a paragraph of five to six sentences, discuss the life lessons which are taught in fairy tales.
Fairy tales are magical stories that presents wondrous worlds that appeal and captivate
children. It teaches of the struggle between right vs wrong and/or good vs evil, and as such,
they are filled with important messages, morals, valuable life lessons as well as difficulties and
struggles children face in their everyday life. Fairy tales can help children conquer their fears
with battles through the characters in the story, it can teach them critical thinking skills to
understand the power of consequence when we make certain choices, it also teaches about
society, relationships, values, emotions, how the world works, how to treat others and so much
more.

Question 3

3.1 ) Discuss the levels of the FAL Foundation Phase classroom in which you may teach this
rhyme.
This is a Nursery Rhyme Song, that I will use in a Grade R classroom to teach learners about
basic mathematical concepts and counting. It teaches learners listening skills as well as to
follow direction, and they could potentially also learn new sounds and words that might extend
their vocabulary and can aid their development for successfully learning to read at a later stage.

3.2) Explain how learners can use actions, objects, and musical instruments to indicate their
understanding of this counting rhyme.
When actions, objects and musical instruments are added to rhymes, they become highly
enjoyable and educational at the same time. Learners can be introduced to a number line and
the teacher can point to each number as they recite the rhyme. To evaluate evaluate number
awareness, learners must hold up the correct number of fingers as they recite each number
word in the rhyme. Alternately, teachers can pass out objects that that represent the objects in
the rhyme, and have them count out the appropriate number, for example they can count out
6 sticks. (‘’Five, six, Pick up sticks”). Musical instruments like drums and shakers or clapping of
hands can be used to sounds out the correct numbers as they recite the rhyme and lastly the
learners can finish each line of numbers with the appropriate action., for example: One,
two…………. buckle my shoe – learners can pretend to buckle their shoe.
