1. The weather has changed; the sky is overcast. They hope for “forty days and forty nights” of rain;
they mention “ark” (p. 128). Which biblical story do these images refer to?
The story of Noah and his Ark.
2. Because of the lightning Stanley is able to make out the shape of the mountains far away. What
does the peak look like (p. 128)?
Like a fist, with the thumb sticking up
3. The shape makes Stanley think of his great-grandfather’s words (p. 128)
“I found refuge on God’s thumb.”
4. How did Stanley’s great-grandfather refer to the nurse who took care of him in hospital and whom
he later married (p. 129)?
He called her an angel.
Chapter 30
1. Stanley feels awkward while Zero is digging his hole, unsure of what to do with himself, still he
decides to let Zero keep doing it. Why (p. 133)?
He needs to save his energy to be a good teacher for Zero.
2. When a fight starts between Zigzag and Stanley, what does Zero do (p. 135)?
He chokes Zigzag.
3. Why does he do it?
He’s defending Stanley, who has been helping him.
The warden and Mr Pendanksi forbid Stanley to continue teaching Zero, because, they say, “it causes
him stress” and “makes his blood boil”.
4. What does Zero do and what does he say? (p. 139)
He says he’s not digging another hole, smashes Mr Pendanski’s face with a shovel, and walks off
into the desert.

No, he doesn’t, he leaves his canteen behind.
