,QUESTION 1

Question 1.1: Refer to Activity 1.1 and Activity 1.3 in Learning Unit 1. The cholera outbreak in
London and the simulated cholera outbreak in Vulindlela are excellent examples of a spatial problem
that was solved by means of spatial reasoning. After consulting recent news articles and exploring
other sources discussing current events, select one example of a problem that you consider to be a
spatial problem. In a sentence, briefly outline your spatial problem and then list three features,
which make the problem spatial.

Note: Do not list spatial elements, simply identify and list three spatial features from the problem
you have identified in the media. (5 marks)

Question 1.2: Geographic attribute data can either be qualitative or quantitative in nature. Explain
what is meant by qualitative data and quantitative data. Provide a geographic/spatial example for
each. (6 marks)

Question 1.3: Explain how uniform and variable map symbols can be used to display qualitative and
quantitative data. Consider having to map the location of water pumps fitted to boreholes on farms
in the Waterberg District Municipality, Limpopo. You also have data containing the number of kilo-
litres pumped per year for each water pump. You may want to use illustrations in your answer to aid
your explanation. (5 marks)

, Question 1.4: By referring to any of the topographical maps made available in the module (you can
access them on Google Drive -
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/100Wj7Hqr_mWQ2VEtixXcimg2JUgcBEqi), provide a brief
outline of what you understand to be the purpose of the map (2 marks). After explaining the
purpose of the map refer to how a map can be used to address geographical questions such as
“Where?”, “What?” and “Why?” (6 marks).

Question 2

Question 2.1: Read through the scenario in the paragraph below and answer questions 2.1.1 to
2.1.4.

A wine farmer in the Overberg District Municipality has noticed that certain vineyards on his farm
produce grapes of a higher quality than those from other vineyards on the farm – and he would like
to know why.

By investigating the matter, he hopes to increase the quality of all the vineyards on the farm. He had
each vineyard’s boundary drawn and mapped. The result of this exercise showed that the vineyards
producing high-quality grapes are distributed randomly.

The farmer then visited all the vineyards on the farm, took measurements and made comparisons
between the vineyards producing high-quality grapes and those producing low-quality grapes. By
doing this, he identified certain factors that influenced the quality of the grapes that a vineyard
produces. These factors are the following:

 The amount of rainfall each vineyard receives. Vineyards receiving on average between 60
and 90 mm of rain per month during the months of May, June, July and August produce high
quality grapes.

 The slope of the landscape. A landscape with a slope of between 6° and 10° is best suited for
the production of high-quality grapes.

 The number of hours each vineyard receives sunlight. Vineyards that receive between 10
and 12 hours of sunlight per day are best suited for the production of high-quality grapes.
