PUBH 4100: Evaluating Public Health Programs
Houston Obesity Prevention Health Program Evaluation

, My health program evaluation will focus on obesity prevention and management among
children in Houston County. There is a high prevalence of obesity within growing populations in
Texas. About 17.3% of children between 10 to 17 years are obese (Stateofchildhoodobesity.org,
2020). The mentioned statistics places Texas in the 12th position among the 50 US states
prompting the need for a weight management program that would address the issue. The obesity
prevention program's mission is to ensure that all young people engage in healthy lifestyles such
as Yoga, a nutritious diet, biking, hiking, and other outdoor activities that contribute to weight
management. Young people are presented with progressively encouraging weight loss
environments, attain a healthy weight, and maintain healthy practices.
The purpose of evaluating the program mentioned above is to determine its effectiveness
(McKenzie et al., 2017). The mentioned obesity prevention program will involve a new model
that increases the collaboration between healthcare groups and community organizations to
improve health at local and state levels. If the program turns effective, it will help implement
suitable obesity prevention policies, obesity prevention strategies and promote an effective
environment within Houston communities. There was a perception that addressing individual
child health through population level would lower obesity prevalence, chronic diseases, and
healthcare costs.
Local government, State government, dietarians, fitness instructors, pediatric nurses,
early care educators, community nurses, Houston’s community, and guardians are stakeholders
involved in the program operation. Secondly, obesity prevention programs will affect children
between 10 to 17 years. The program's evaluation results would help CDC, National Institute of
Health, The Institute of Medicine, and The Whitehouse Taskforce on Childhood Obesity in
policy development.
