Why is it so difficult to regain speech after a stroke? Left hemisphere of the brain controls the ability to speak A stroke can occur when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a left hemisphere of the brain is blocked Likewise, bleeding in the brain also can cause strokes if it damages brain cells Without oxygen, brain cells in the left hemisphere start to die within minutes Strokes cause damage to the muscles that control speech Brain may be able to resume functioning by changing the way tasks are performed
