Maternity - Module 2 Study Guide 21 SEPTEMBER 2020 Agenda Alex H. - ch 12 [229-248] Liz - ch 13 [249-263] Jess - ch 14 [264-297] Tay/ Alex R. - ch 25 [533-536 & 538-560] Chapter 12 - Conception & Fetal development [229- 248] *fertilization *fetal development & Key milestones in fetal development *amniotic fluid, placenta, umbilical cord + their functions within pregnancy Terms Definition Ovum An egg that matures & releases at ovulation. Fertile for approx 24 hrs. Sperm Semen remains viable in female reproductive system for 2-3 days Conception Union of single egg & sperm // marks the beginning of pregnancy Fertilization Takes place in ampulla (outer third) of the uterine tube (fallopian tube) Implantation Between 6-10 days after conception a blastocyst is embedded in the endometrium until fully recovered Fetal Development & key milestones ● Pregnancy last approximately 10 lunar months, 9 calendar months, 40 weeks, or 280 days ● Heartbeat at 4 weeks. ○ By 12 weeks - kidneys able to excrete urine & sex fully recognizable ○ By 16 weeks - meconium in bowel ○ By 20 weeks - fetal movement is strong enough for mother to feel ○ After 32 weeks - lung surfactant present in developed alveoli Functions of the Amniotic Fluid: ● Help maintain a constant fetal body temperature ● Serving as a source of oral fluid and a repository for waste ● Assisting in maintenance of fluid and electrolyte homeostasis ● Allows the fetus freedom of movement for musculoskeletal development ● Cushions the fetus from outside forces allowing pressure to be distributed from one side to another with minimal exertion on the fetus ● The weightless state of amniotic fluid allows the face and body of the fetus to develop symmetrically ● Auditory stimulation is provided by rhythmic sounds of the blood flow through the umbilical cord, and uterine sounds are transmitted in a muted form to the fetus ● Amniotic fluid has antibacterial factors to protect the fetus from infection, and (with adequate volume), facilitates normal fetal lung development ● Fluid keeps the embryo from tangling with membranes. Functions of the Umbilical Cord: ● Chapter 13 Anatomy & Physiology of pregnancy [249-263] *Signs of pregnancy, probable, presumptive, and positive (page 262) *Fundal height and how to measure - - -
