development due to extrinsic factors or both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Tabulate
five examples of intrinsic factors and five examples of extrinsic factors.
Intrinsic factors Extrinsic factors
Sensory impairments Poor teaching (education)
Physical impairments Emotional problems (depression, anxiety)
Mental or intellectual impairments Behavioural problems
Physiological impairments Language barriers
Developmental problems Environment
1.3 How do the following factors cause barriers to learning?
1.3.1 Discriminating attitudes - labelling learners can create a negative impact on their
self image. Teachers who label learners tend to not focus on their learners abilities
and regard them as “uneducable” without even giving them a fair chance or finding
different methods to teach in a way that they can understand.
1.3.2 Inflexible curriculum- An inflexible curriculum is rigid and non-inclusive. It fails to
provide for the group of diverse learners in schools today, which in turn causes
learners to fail. Improperly trained teachers may use teaching methods that affect the
involvement & initiative of the learner. The curriculum does not teach things that can
be applied to a situation that the learners may find themselves in.
1.3.3 Inappropriate and inadequate provision of support services- Teachers may be
unmotivated, lazy and lack dedication which can affect the learner‟s performance.
The unsafe buildings and equipment on the school premises can add to the learner‟s
endangerment and lack of concentration. Teachers may not have the proper
qualifications.
