A. Identify a nursing theory that has influenced your values and goals. A. I am a brand new nurse. I identified most with “From Novice to Expert” by Patricia Ben- ner. This nursing theory is something that I hold close to my heart because I am still learning and it helps keep me grounded in that I will not know everything just because I went to nursing school. Experience is a learning experience that makes me better at what I do and increases my knowledge that I am constantly building on to be a better nurse. (Current Nursing, 2011) 1. Explain how nurses apply the identified theory from part A to implement excellent nursing practices. 1. Nurses are constantly learning and perfecting their skills and knowledge base. This the- ory is applied in every nurses career day to day by experiencing and learning from those experiences. (Current Nursing, 2011) 2. Discuss how the identified theory from part A fits your professional practice. This theory fit my professional practice by setting a template for my growth as I gain ex- periences and knowledge from those experience to move from a novice nurse to a more experi- enced nurse up to an expert level by the end of my career. Identify the contributions of two historical nursing figures in the nineteenth or twentieth cen- tury. Florence Nightingale- Environmental Theory Patricia Benner- From Novice to Expert 1. Compare the differences in contributions of the two historical figures identified in part B. 2. Florence Nightingale contributed to the nursing world by implementing practices that in- fluenced the sanitation practices and environmental aspects of care of the patient. 3. Patricia Benner contributed to the nursing world by designating the different learning lev- els of a nurses career. She states that experience is the prerequisite to being and ex- pert. The differences of these contributions include one being to set a clean environment with decreased harm to the patient while the other shows how experience is a big factor in the career of a nurse. (Current Nursing, 2011) 2. Describe how the contributions of the two historical figures influence your professional nurs- ing practice. Currently being a novice Operating Room nurse, I use Florence Nightingale’s theory of sanitation and decreased patient harm by adjusting the environment for healing in the operating room. Also, I am a novice in the nursing development levels of Benner’s theory. I feel I use both of these theories the most in my everyday work. (Current Nursing, 2011) C.
