The well-being of people and how they interact with others can be affected by addiction. According to Choate (2015), addiction affects how family functions. There are many addictions that pose a threat to people and proper functioning of relationships such as drug addiction, gambling, pornography, alcohol, smoking, prescription drugs and many more. One of such addiction that is becoming a growing concern in public health is prescription opioid addiction (Weiss & Rao, 2017). This addiction entails patients getting use to the prescribed opioid in such a way that they become dependent on the opioid for daily living. Consequently, patients who undergo pharmacotherapy in rehabilitation may end up getting addicted to the prescribed opioid. The issue of relapse may arise after they have left the rehabilitation program, resulting in a more severe mental, emotional, and physical state of the patient. In a bid to provide better healthcare through nursing, challenges in nursing practice can be investigated, analyzed, and solutions recommended through evidenced-based research. In this paper, a nursing problem associated with drug addiction is identified and by critically appraising relevant research in evidenced-based practice, an intervention that will cause a change is proposed. PICOT Question Adults in recovery homes that are placed on pharmacotherapy are given drugs for the rehabilitation process. Some of these drugs include prescription opioid. The use of non-medical prescription opioid has been identified as a health challenge (Weiss & Rao, 2017). Not only has this health issue been studied in adults, Choate (2015), has explored the issue in a family setting when an adolescent is concerned. Research shows that the behavior of adolescents is negatively affected by reason of prescribed opioid addiction and such behaviors have a detrimental impact on families (Choate, 2015). Therefore, it is possible for questions to arise as to how prevention of relapse to prescription opioid addiction after a rehabilitation program may be achieved in adults undergoing such programs. The development of the PICOT Question that was addressed in this paper followed the recommended practice of identifying the various aspects of the PICOT question as follows: P – Adults in recovery with a history of opioid abuse I – Behavior modification C – No behavior modification O – Reduced incidence of relapse and improved patient and family attitudes T – Six month after a drug rehabilitation program Having identified the various aspects of the PICOT question, they are combined to form the following PICOT question: In adult patients with a history of opioid abuse, how effective is behavior modification compared to no behavior modification in reducing the incidence of relapse and improving patient and family attitudes in behaviors six months after completing a drug rehabilitation program? Upon modification of the PICOT question to obtain a clearly defined statement as mentioned above, research in evidenced-based practice that is necessary to find a solution to the practice problem were consulted. In order to obtain a broader perspective, both quantitative and qualitative research was carefully analyzed for recommendations that will be translated into nursing practice for solving the problem of relapse in the identified population. Quantitative Research Article Critique Two quantitative research articles were critically examined for relevant information regarding the practice problem being considered in this paper. The first article was titled
