1. A Social Worker/ Researcher can use different research methods during the step of the
community work process of identifying and analyzing the impediments of a community. As a
researcher I chose Qualitative Research method
Research method
Qualitative approach, because I think it is best appropriate for the type of a research project that I will
be conducting, since the aim of the project is to find out what other perspectives are there when we
talking about HIV and AIDS. And due to the size of a group I have chosen, because it’s a very small group
of people.
Qualitative Research method
Qualitative methods are used when community issues, problems or needs cannot be assessed by using
information that is expressed entirely in numbers. This is especially the case when you seek answers to
questions such as “Why?” and “How?”, need in-depth information on people’s motives, opinions and
perceptions, feelings and relationships or have to explore complex issues. They are also the methods in
which the needs assessment process can additionally be used to mobilise community involvement.
There are especially five major qualitative methods that are used in the community development. They
are observations, interviews, focus groups, community workshops and meetings, and issue raising.
Weyers (2011:163)
Green and Thorogood (2009:5, 38) holds the view that the goal, aim, or purpose of the study will
(among other factors) determine whether one should use the qualitative approach as the principal or
