Example: A 12-carbon, fully saturated fatty acid is called dodecanoic acid. In the case of unsaturated fatty acids, an –cen- is added. Example: A 16-carbon, unsaturated fatty acid with a double bond at the 9th carbon is called 9-hexadecenoic acid.
