LINGUISTICS: L1 AND L2 ACQUISITION
L1 AND L2 ACQUISITION Unlike L1, learners of L2 already have already acquired at least one language, which is their L1. L2 speakers find it stressful when they are unable to express themselves clea rly and correctly, unlike speakers of L1 who are willing to try to use the language-even when their proficiency is quite limited. L1 feel comfortable to use the language, while L2 only feel the need to use the language when it is only necessary. L1 learners spend a lot of time in contact with the language or languages spoken around them, and this gives them ample time to learn the language while L2 learners receive specified amount of time to learn the new language. In L1 acquisition, parents tend to correct for meaning rather than grammar while in L2 teachers of language L2 learners are usually corrected for politeness, because their expression might come out as rude or inappropriate. In acquisition of vocabulary, the context within which L2 vocabulary is acquired is not as helpful as in the case of children acquiring L1. However, similarity is seen where, in learning L1 and the learners are exposed to modified or adapted input, whereby in L1 speakers, child direct speech is used, and in L2 Foreigner talk or teacher talk is used in the acquisition. Most child learners are willing to try to use the language-even when their proficiency is quite limited, in L1 and in L2 learners that are ready to learn English language, and they try as hard to perfect their proficiency, according to case studies of using.
