The Department of Curriculum and Instructional Studies places specific emphasis on

classroom and teaching and learning activities. Please fill in these templates fully. For day 2-5,
you fill a separate template for each day. This activity is very important as you get a chance to
observe an experienced teacher whilst planning your own way/style of teaching. Use this
opportunity to prepare for your own teaching career. This assignment should be
submitted at the end of the first week of your teaching practice.

Although the school is a private school, the school fees are lower than those of other schools
and thus the school attracted lower income families and learners with less resources are some
of the factors.

13. Describe or make a drawing of the classroom where observation took place (Table,
desks arrangement, cupboards, teaching aids, walls)

The classrooms are virtual classrooms. On the teachers screen all the learners are
visible. Each learner has the ability to unmute and mute themselves, they have the ability
to annotate on the screen and explain concepts further. The learners can also share their
screen or turn on the camera and show the teacher what they have done. There is also a

chat box that can be used by shy learners. The accessibility and control of the teacher is
greater.
14. Describe the seating arrangement of the classroom with regards to grouping.

There is no seating arrangement as the learners are there virtually present. There are
breakout rooms however which means that the teacher can group the learners at
random.

15. Discuss whether the classroom is conducive to learning.
(Classroom atmosphere, environment of the classroom, mood)

Although the learners are not all together there is a positive happy environment in the
classrooms, the learners participate, and the environment is conductive to learning.

16. Outline how discipline is managed in the classroom.
(Learner’s behaviour, teacher’s and learner’s language, choice of words in questions
and responses)

The discipline of the class is well managed learners do not interrupt the teacher; the
learners speak to ask question when asked too. The learner’s choice of words is
appropriate, and the teacher’s response is kind and caring.

17. Elaborate on contextual factors (internal and external influences), which interrupt the
lessons.

Things that interrupt the lesson are Wi-Fi issues, laptop/computer faults and programs
like Canvas, Clas or Zoom Crashing. The other issue that we have is Load-Shedding
however all lessons are recorded, and learners can watch them and inbox the teacher
any queries.

18. Discuss how time is managed with regards to the length of lessons, start and finish of
periods, bells and after break period,

Lessons are 45 minutes long. The learners are sent a link 5 minutes before the start of
the class. Between classes learners have five minutes to connect to the next class. There
are 7 classes a day and learners have a break from 10:25am to 11:00am daily.

19. Describe the relationships between learners themselves and between the teacher and
learners. Are they positive or negative? (Humour, calling of names, favouritism,
tasks/roles distribution).


The learners communicate both in the classroom and after school via various social
media platforms. The learners seem to be comfortable with there own class members.
The teacher’s attitude is very positive, and the teacher displays no favouritism.
