ATI Video Case Studies- Anxiety Please watch the video case study and answer the video challenge question: Provide a response with depth and detail, minimum of 150 words. The priority action for the nurse in this scenario is to tell the client to breathe slowly in and out of their mouth and not to leave their sight. By breathing slowly, the nurse could place their hand over their shoulder or directly stand in front of them and follow their breath. Their breaths should be full, filling their chest and stomach. If the client is still having difficulty, they could close their eyes, as this could decrease the stimuli and allow the client to focus more on their breaths. The nurse should ensure that the client is slowing down and that their anxiety is improving with time. The nurse should also not leave the patients sight, as this can cause more anxiety for the client since they’ll be experiencing this anxiety alone. Additionally, answer these following questions completely, in full sentences.  What are examples of therapeutic communication techniques that are appropriate to use when communicating with an anxious client? When communicating with an anxious client you should participate in active listening, understanding and providing clarification when necessary.  What are examples of non-therapeutic communication techniques? Non therapeutic communication techniques would be to ask “why” questions and questions that may seem that you’re disagreeing with them as it may make them become defensive.  Why is it important for the nurse to use therapeutic communication techniques when interacting with a client who has anxiety? It’s imperative to use therapeutic communication techniques when interacting with a client who has anxiety because it establishes a solid foundation between the client and the nurse. This would allow the client to feel comfortable in expressing their feelings and needs and therefore achieve a better outcome.  What are the consequences of not using therapeutic communication techniques? Consequences of not using therapeutic communications techniques would include the patients’ needs may not be met and patient would have difficulty in trusting their nurse.  How would this potentially affect the therapeutic relationship? This type of relationship could drastically affect the client and nurse relationship to where the patient may have no communication with the nurse.
