Understanding Health and Safety in the Business Workplace
Assignment 1

Understanding Health and Safety in the Business Workplace
For my organisation I will be talking about College, since this is a business I’m most familiar
with and have more to talk about, College will have a large variety of health and safety
regulations since they have a lot of employees and students that they are responsible for
while they are there. A sensible approach to health and safety in schools/colleges means
focusing on how the real risks are managed.

Legal requirements and regulations for ensuring the health, safety and
security of those employed in the business.
College has a lot of responsibilities, for example taking care of students and making sure
they are safe at college when undertaking college activities, such as learning and possibly
going on trips. The risk management to keep students safe should be proportional to the
nature of the activities. Teachers must make sure students on existing trips that students
are safe at all times, students should be able to explore but be monitored in case of an issue
such as getting lost. Schools and Colleges must appoint a competent person to make sure
they meet their health and safety duties. This person is someone who has the necessary
skills, knowledge and experience to give sensible guidance about managing the health and
safety risks at the College.
Colleges must have a health and safety policy in place, where certain elements of the police
should be covered, this includes set roles and responsibilities within risk management
processes, the mechanisms to control risk, specific control measures that need to be
implemented.
Every health and safety policy is separated into 4 elements, this is plan, do, check and act.
All of these are slightly different.
 Plan- Leaders should have a set direction for effective health and safety
management
 Do- Introducing the management systems and practises that make sure any potential
risks are dealt with sensibly, responsibly and effectively.
 Check- Reporting anything that happened and monitoring carefully
 Act- A professional management review of health and safety performance
Students at the college should also make sure they’re keeping themselves safe and follow
any health and safety procedures. It is their own responsibility to follow instructions given in
case of an emergency.

Understanding Health and Safety in the Business Workplace
Assignment 1

As an employee in the organisation, the employee has the right to work in places where all
the risks to the health and safety are properly controlled and monitored to avoid possible
incidents. As an employee, you should make sure you’re safe and in case of danger, you
have the right to leave the working area, in case of a fire for example or anything else that
you feel like would be dangerous for you. If any incidents happen in the work place, the
employee should inform their employer about it, such as accidents at work that may have
hurt you, this should be reported immediately. Employees also have the right to have paid
time off work for training if they are a safety representative, a rest break for at least 20
minutes if they work more than 6 hours, and an annual paid leave.
An employee at work is responsible for taking care of their own health safety, and perhaps
people who may affected by what the employee does. As well as cooperating with others
following the health and safety procedures without interfering, misusing anything provided
for the health, safety and welfare.
At the College, all staff members must make sure they’re keeping themselves safe as there
could be hazards in the workplace, these could be slips, trips and falls, for example stairs
and wet floors that have been washed. Teachers who wear heels to work must be extra
cautious of this just in case they may hurt themselves.

Risk Assessments
Colleges as employers have a legal responsibility to carry our suitable and effective risk
assessments in accordance with the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999 ,
mainly for their properly and activities including, for instance College visits. Having high
standards of health and safety is the best way to go, as this is not just about legal
compliance, but also achieving and providing excellence in the way they are managed.
The image here shows that
accidental injury is quite
common in both England and
Wales, young people are
more likely from the ages of
10 to 24 to get injured, and
most of this period they are at
school or College.
