invention of the cotton gin. The growth of cotton made the South

expanding slavery westward and intensifying sectional tensions leading
up to the Civil War.

Answer: A machine invented by Eli Whitney, in 1793, that quickly
seperates cotton fibers from their seeds. Made cotton production more
efficient, leading to a boom in the American textile industry. Shift from
manual labor to mechanization. Shift from small far to plantations,
which required more land. This encouraged westward expansion.
Increase in slave labor and in the dispertion of slaves.
