Development through
The life stages

Gabrielle Elmes (497977) Health and social care (level 3)
6/3/2020 Unit 4 task 1

,I will be writing about the PIES development for each of the life stages achieved in
my grandmother Maureen’s life.

Life span describes the duration of a human being’s life. It explains the different life
stages one must go through in life (unless there is unexpected death before
completing every life stage) These are the stages that should be followed:

CONCEPTION

This is from ages 0-9 months
This is when a baby is conceived during
sexual intercourse and a woman’s egg is
fertilised by a male sperm creating a new
life. (My grandmother in this case)

PREGNANCY (GESTATION)

This is from 9 months until birth

1

, In this process, a foetus forms in a mothers womb for 9 months (40 weeks) until
birth. In this process, Maureen would have gone through 3 trimesters of physical
growth in her mother’s womb.

1st trimester- This is from the first day of your last period to 12 weeks. In this
trimester, Maureen’s nervous system would have begun formation as well as her
heart and all the other major organs. Arms and legs would begin to grow and fingers
and toes would have started development. Her face would have started to develop
features and her external sex organs would have begun to show. Her eyelids would
have closed to protect her eyes and would open again at 28 weeks. Her nerves and
muscles would have begun to work together so that she could make a fist. She
would have officially been called an ‘embryo.’

2nd trimester- This is from 13 weeks to 28 weeks. Her organs would now be formed
but not fully developed quite yet. She would have started to hear and swallow. She
would have begun moving around in the womb. She would have now developed
sleeping and waking cycles. Her teeth and bones would now be denser and she can
now suck on her thumb and begin to yawn. She would now be able to make faces.

3rd trimester- This is from the end of 28 weeks
until birth (40 weeks). Her eyes would have
partially opened now as well as beginning to
kick and stretch in the womb. Her hair would
have started growing. She would have rapidly
begun weight gain and she would have been
practising how to breathe. Her fingernails would
begin to grow and her skin would have been
pink and smooth. At this point, she would have
taken up most of the amniotic sac. She would
have begun to turn head-first ready for delivery
and her toenails would be growing and her
chest would be prominent. At the end of this
trimester, her mother would have been ready to
deliver her.
