UNIT 29 – UNDERSTANDING RETAIL
Unit 29 (D1) Task 3 – Evaluate the distribution systems in
delivering goods and services for a selected organisation.
In this task, I will talk about the distribution systems in delivering good of Kingsmill’s
bread.
Responsiveness to customer needs
The responsiveness to customer need is a big deal especially when it comes to
distribution, this is because if customer needs are not met in time they will go to a
new retailer or lose interest which is why it is very important to be responsive to
customer needs. An advantage of Kingsmill bread is that they are very soft and good
as to how they are made. Kingsmill breads are very different and this will mean that
responsiveness to customer needs is better as they are quick and so many different
breads are made from Kingsmill which is good. A disadvantage is the shipping
process as this can cause issues to the responsiveness because it is much longer.
Being responsive means being quick and responding to something, taking a month
to ship will cause issues as this is not being responsive. However, this is not an
issue as they are being given in shipping containers which means there are enough
until the next shipment. I think that because of the amount of Kingsmill bread given
and in the time it is given. The time frame is balanced and is responsive to the
customer needs because Kingsmill breads are never sold out and is always
restocked. A way to improve the responsiveness is sending the Kingsmill breads by
a fast delivery service as this will help improve responsiveness dramatically as
retailers will be getting their breads instantly.
Cost effectiveness
When making Kingsmill breads, I believe that it is cost effective as they gather the
wheat with a machine gatherer, this saves a lot of money because the machine
gathers much more than humans and does it quicker which means it is more
efficient. This helps the business as it can do more work efficiently and the only
expense will be updating the machine which is long term rather than paying workers
regularly and using more money. An advantage to cost effectiveness is that the
business can find ways to save money to make the breads and make a higher profit
or use it for more operations. A disadvantage to that is some things can’t be done by
machines for instance putting the breads in the machines. I believe that cost
effectiveness is good with Kingsmill’s bread as they are saving money and if they do
open new operation they can give more jobs to people because wheat farms are in
areas that are usually poor because of its environment. They are faster and more
efficient and Kingsmill’s bread will not have to pay constant wages to the amount of
workers they have.
Being up to date
Being up to date is important; this could be with deadlines in quality or trends in
general. This is important especially with Kingsmill’s bread as staying in trend is
important for a business, but being late in a trend due to distribution issues can
cause lots of issues. For instance late shipments to retailers, because people might
go to other retailers to find the breads, and this can result in a Kingsmill’s losing
money and pull out from their business. A benefit to this is that being up to date
