PHYSIC 101 Forces and motion Lab 2. Includes Answers 2020
Forces, Friction and Motion Lab 2b Introduction Today we will learn about how the force put on an object determines how it will move when there is no friction and when there is friction. • Open PhET Force and Motion Basics • Click the button that says “Run Now”. It might take a few minutes to load. The screen will look like this: • All answers will be recorded on this document. You will have to switch between the document and the forces and motion simulation in order to complete all parts of the activity. Explore • Place a man on each side of the rope. • Hit the “go” button. • Hit the “Return” button. Try it again with either the same amount of men on each side or a different amount of men on each side. • Hit the “Reset all” button. Click box next to “sum of forces” and “values,” continue putting men on each side. • Hit the “Return” button. Questions ( answer each question in the space provided) • How can you make the blue side win? Put more men on the blue side than the red side • How can you make the red side win? Put more red men on the red side than blue men on the blue side • How can you get a tie on both sides? Put the same amount of men on both sides • Repeat step 3 . Come up with a number sentence or equation we can use to find the sum of the forces. Here are a few suggestions. This one is the one I applied most below- Fapplied - Ffriction Fapplied + Ffriction • If there was only one man pulling the cart what would the sum of forces be? If only one man was pulling the cart the sum of forces would be 150 N going to the right if the man is only on the right or going to the left if the man is only on the left. Explain Aim: How does applied force and friction affect the speed of an object? If the applied force and friction added or subtracted equal anything but zero, the object speed will either be slow or fast. Typically, if there is more friction the object slows down and if there is less friction the object will speed up. If the force and friction of the object equal each other the object will move at a constant speed. The science concept is: If Sum of forces are not zero, object speeds up or slows down. If zero then its speed is constant.
