The Fault in our stars John Green
In a nutshell
The book is about a girl named Hazel Grace, she is suffering cancer and she should
have been already dead, when she was 13 the doctors had given up on her, but
surprisingly a new experimental medicine saved her life. Hazel is constrained by her
folks to go to a church gathering for individuals with a weakness, where she meets a
person named Augustus Walters, otherwise called Gus. He is disabled since he lost
a leg. As a surprise Augustus takes Hazel on a trip towards Amsterdam, to meet her
favourite author, Peter van Houten. But he wasn’t as kind as Hazel and Augustus
hoped he would be to them. Hazel was heartbroken after what happened with Peter.
To comfort her, Gus took her out to a decent restaurant in Amsterdam. At the last day
of their trip Hazel is glad to the point that she kissed Augustus. They returned to the
States, and they kept in touch. After a shocking phone call from Gus, Hazel was
heartbroken again. It turned out that Gus had been suffering for a long time with
cancer. He appears not to be saved and Gus bites the dust just two days later in the
hospital. Hazel went to his funeral, and surprisingly also Peter van Houten was also
there. After a brief conversation he handed Hazel a letter, from Gus. Stating he knew
he had malignant growth. But he simply didn’t want Hazel to know, because he just
wanted to make Hazel happy. At the end of his letter, he expressed his love for
Hazel.
Point of view
The fault in our stars is written from the perspective of the main character Hazel. The
way it effects the book is because hazel describes everything so detailed, so clearly
and so honest. It made me feel like we were in touch at some points, the way she
talks about suffering cancer was really intense sometimes, but it made the book so
beautiful.
Explanation of the title
The fault in our stars hasn’t has to do a lot with the novel. In fact, the title of this novel
comes from a Shakespears play Julius Caesar. “The fault, dear Brutus is not in our
stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings”. In other words: you are to blame for
the nastiness in your life. John green doesn’t agree with Shakespeare because he
suggests something different namely sometimes it is up to fate. The whole novel is
about two innocent teenagers whose whole life was destroyed by an inevitable
illness. The novel is about showing that despite the bad fate they had, whenever
there is hope, there is life.
This is the most obvious explanation of the title; in fact, it is also possible that ‘the
fault in our stars’ has something to do with some type of astrology. The zodiac sign of
Hazel is Cancer, and then she got cancer. What if her star sign caused it, making
someone inevitable ill is a fault. So that is why the book is called ‘the fault in Our
Stars’
