How to Read This Plan
This is your step-by-step checklist for getting an SBA 7(a) loan approved and funded. It is
organized by stage, not by month, because the SBA process does not follow a fixed calendar ---
it depends on how quickly you complete each step and how fast the lender and SBA process
your application.
Stage 1 is the most critical. It covers the contingencies you MUST meet before you even
approach a lender. If you skip this stage, you will be denied. Most denials happen because the
applicant was not ready.
Stage 2 is where you build your business plan and assemble the document package. This is the
work that takes the most time but determines whether the underwriter says yes.
Stages 3--5 cover finding the right lender, submitting the application, surviving underwriting, and
deploying the loan proceeds after approval.
TIMELINE EXPECTATIONS
Stage 1 (Pre-Qualification): 30--90 days depending on your current
credit and savings position.
Stage 2 (Business Plan & Documents): 2--4 weeks of focused work.
Stage 3 (Lender Selection & Submission): 1--2 weeks.
Stage 4 (Underwriting & Approval): 30--90 days (SBA processing +
lender review).
Stage 5 (Funding & Deployment): 1--2 weeks after approval.
Total from start to funding: 3--6 months if you are already
qualified. Longer if you need to fix credit issues or save the 10%
equity injection first.

Stage 1: Pre-Qualification Contingencies
These are the non-negotiable requirements you must meet BEFORE you approach any lender.
Think of these as the entrance exam. If you cannot check every box in this section, you are not
ready to apply. Applying before you are ready wastes time, burns a hard inquiry, and creates a
denial on your record that makes the next application harder.
⚠️ CONTINGENCY #1: THE 10% EQUITY INJECTION --- NON-NEGOTIABLE
You must have 10% of the loan amount in your bank account BEFORE you
reach the underwriting stage.
For a $100,000 SBA loan: you need $10,000 in cash, sitting in your
business or personal bank account, visible on a bank statement.
For a $50,000 loan: $5,000. For a $250,000 loan: $25,000. The
math is simple: loan amount × 10% = your required cash.
This is called the "equity injection." It proves to the lender that
YOU have skin in the game --- you are not asking the government to
fund 100% of your risk.
The money must be SEASONED in your account. That means it has been
there for at least 60--90 days. You cannot borrow $10,000 from a
friend the day before underwriting and deposit it. The lender will
review 2--3 months of bank statements and will see any large,
unexplained deposits.
Where can the 10% come from? Personal savings, business account
balance, gift from a family member (with a signed gift letter stating
it does not need to be repaid), or in some cases, the value of
equipment or assets you already own that will be used in the
business.
Where can the 10% NOT come from? Credit cards, personal loans,
borrowed money that must be repaid, or funds that appear suddenly
without explanation.
If you do not have the 10% yet: STOP. Go back to Phase 0 of your
business model's Implementation Plan and continue saving until you
do. The SBA loan will still be there when you are ready.
