Union Profile
Labor Unions play a vital role in agitating for workers' rights, better compensation, and
provides a conducive working environment. Unions in the United States represent workers in
various industries recognized under the US Labor laws. Most of the labor Unions in the US are
often aligned to one of the two leading Umbrella organizations AFL-CIO and Change to Win
Federation (Fitzgerald, Bruns, Sonka, Furco, & Swanson, 2016). This will, however, discuss the
National Education Association, the largest Union and professional interest group in the United
States. The Union was founded in 1857 and had a membership of 3,000,001 by 2019 (Hursh,
2005). The Union has its main office in Washington DC with Lily E. Garcia as the Union's
president. NES is incorporated as a professional Association in some states and Trade unions in
most States.
The Union sets its policies through Representatives, a delegation comprised of elected
representatives from each state and local affiliates, retired members, collation of student
members, and the United Education Profession (Hursh, 2005). The Representatives elect the
President, Vice-president, treasurers, and secretary at the Representative Assembly. The Union
has the Board of Directors and an Executive committee charged with the responsibility for the
general policies and interests of the Union. The Board of directors is made up of a director from
each member state, six directors for retired members, as well as three for student members.
Ethnic minorities, classroom teachers, administrators, and active members are also represented in
the Board. The Union majorly operates in the Education Sector and has been serving for over
160 years.
