Purpose of this assignment
The assignment explores the major groups of organisms of medical importance. It will enable
learners to explain how disease spreads throughout the population. Mechanisms used to
control such organisms both inside and outside the body will be examined including the body’s
methods of defence.

Scenario
You are a young scientist and have begun work in industry or in healthcare. You are
investigating the outbreak of some infections in your area. You need to carry out some
identification experiments and also to write a report on how the body defends itself against
specific infections or other disease.
You are also required to prepare an article outlining the effect of the increase in some
diseases linked to how the body defends itself against disease.

Task 1

Describe the structure and the main characteristics of the following major groups of
organisms of medical importance as follows:
(i) Bacteria (circular DNA, cell membrane, cell wall, capsule, flagella, pili, cocci,
bacilli, Gram stain)
(ii) Viruses (obligate, intracellular, parasites, DNA or RNA nucleic acid, capsid,
capsomere, envelope, spikes)
(iii) Fungi (spores, hyphae, mycelia)

Task 2

Use the protocol provided to carry out smears of (1) Gram – positive and (2) Gram – negative
samples. Describe the results of these smears.
This provides evidence for P2

Task 3
Research different sources of information and use them to describe and explain sources of
infection, routes of transmission and entry of micro-organisms into the human body. You must
ensure that the following key terms are used in your explanations:
Human reservoirs; animal reservoirs; non-living reservoirs; contact transmission; vehicle
transmission; vector transmission; entry via oral cavity; entry via droplet and entry via body
fluids.
