different course paths depending on the type of unit they would be working in. All new hire

nurses would start the curriculum with the same courses, but will branch off to other courses

nursing students to confident new hire nurses is crucial in preventing errors that may harm

patients once the new graduate nurses are on their own. This can be achieved with a

wellorganized curriculum that is developed using a theoretical framework.

Mission statement and course description
When developing a curriculum, a mission statement should be created to help outline the

objectives of the curriculum and determine how to reach those objectives. The mission statement

for the new-hire orientation curriculum is to help transition new nurses into the healthcare

facility, enabling them to feel confident in their knowledge and skills to perform safe, quality,

and effective nursing care while working in a team. To help achieve this outcome, the curriculum

needs to focus on having a supportive staff to help transition nurses from the classroom to the

clinical setting. The curriculum also needs to promote the continued academic growth in this

field to ensure that nurses continue to practice nursing with the latest evidence-based practices,

thereby ensuring quality care throughout their nursing career.

The new-hire orientation curriculum will take place over the first few months of the

learner’s hire. In those months, new hires will be introduced to their new workplace along with

the vision and mission of the clinical setting. Nurses will also learn the policies and procedures,

as well as the culture of the hospital. This would include teaching topics such as emergency

hospital codes and what to do when those emergency codes are in effect; also, safety measures

like disposing of hazardous waste. Learning these topics can ensure nurses know what to do in

the event of an emergency and are safe. Next, nurses will also learn how to perform and

demonstrate specific skills needed in the clinical setting, such as nursing assessments, IV

therapy, wound care, and medication administration, using the technology used at the healthcare

facility. In performing a demonstration with a teach back, the educator can help to equip nurses

with the skills needed to complete their care properly and help nurses build in any area where

they may be lacking. When it comes to the use of technology, the new hires will also need to

learn how to use the electronic charting programs used to properly document medication

administrations, along with vital signs and nursing notes. During the new hire orientation, nurses

will be expected to work in groups occasionally to help build their teamwork and communication

skills that will be needed when collaborating with other healthcare professionals in the clinical

setting. For the new hire to be successful in the orientation course, there will be some

professional standards, guidelines, and competencies that the nurses must go over and complete.

Professional standards, guidelines, and competencies must be established in the

curriculum to help nurses learn and maintain safe and effective practice throughout their careers.

The professional standards used in the course should align with those used at the healthcare

facility. Most health care facilities follow the standards provided by the American Nurses

Association (ANA). The ANA, according to Numminen et al (2024), helps to advance the

profession by promoting high standards of nursing practice that assist in maintaining a safe and

ethical work environment while supporting nurses and the public. The standards that will be used

in the curriculum stemming from the ANA will be the standards on how to perform an

assessment, determine a diagnosis, identify desired outcomes, then plan and implement

interventions, and evaluate the results of the plan.


When trying to implement standards of practice, some guidelines should be followed to

help the learners stay on track with their learning timeline. Guidelines help to keep the
