SECTION A: QUESTION 1
Title: Enhancing Toyota South Africa’s Supply Chain through
Innovation, Freight Negotiation, and Environmental Management
Systems
Introduction
Toyota South Africa has long been recognised for its operational
excellence, largely because of its reliance on the Toyota Production
System (TPS), which focuses on eliminating waste and maintaining
efficiency. However, recent disruptions—including the 2019 component
shortage caused by supplier strikes, and the 2022 floods in Durban that
destroyed nearly 45,000 vehicles—have highlighted the fragility of its
supply chain. Added to this is the growing concern around climate
change, which increases the risk of environmental disruptions and
requires companies to comply with strict sustainability standards such as
ISO 14001. Against this backdrop, Toyota must adopt innovative
technologies to improve communication and resilience, negotiate more
effectively with road freight organisations to ensure competitiveness,
and establish an effective Environmental Management System (EMS)
cycle to reduce its environmental footprint. This report evaluates how
Toyota can enhance its supply chain by focusing on these three critical
aspects.
